Drones are about to share the sky over our cities. U-space is Europe’s plan for keeping that sky organised and safe.
A system for low-level airspace
U-space is the EU framework for managing drone traffic close to the ground. Countries designate areas of airspace as U-space, and drones flying there use shared digital services to stay safely apart. The EU rules have applied since January 2023.
Four core services
- Network identification. Every drone broadcasts who it is and where it is.
- Geo-awareness. Pilots and drones know which areas are open and which are restricted.
- Flight authorisation. Each flight is approved before take-off.
- Traffic information. Drones are told about other traffic nearby.
These services come from certified U-space service providers, not from air traffic control.
